Oh, That Was You, Lord
I found my way to You, Great Lord
After bumping along life’s road
I was dunked 3 times in a swimming pool,
Happy you were lifting my load.
That was the day of my Baptism
The day I opened the door,
How proud I was that I found You–
I had a desire to learn even more!
As I walked about, a new Christian,
Filled with love of the Holy Spirit
I could only speak wonders of You, Lord
And give You all the credit.
Then I got busy and life took some turns
And my marriage began to sour
I made no time to pray or reflect
Self-help books were the source of my power
It was his fault, Lord, I had no doubt (!)
For I was the compassionate wife
But things kept spiraling out of control
Our marriage was full of strife.
We made the decision to get divorced
It was just a matter time
Two more paychecks and he’d be ready
I searched for my answers online.
One Spring day I went through my closet
Something urged me to weed out my junk
And there was my Bible tucked away on a shelf
My pulse raced, yet my heart sunk.
How long had it been, Lord, since we’d convened?
I was embarrassed with guilt and shame
I forgot about You and let the world steer me
Do you even remember my name?
I dusted the cover and let it fall open
And the book of Romans appeared
I settled down in a comfortable sit
As Your words and my spirit cohered.
There is no one righteous, I read in 3:10
We’ve all sinned and fall short of God’s glory
We have peace with God that we access through faith
Our tribulations and trials are transitory.
Tribulations may teach us perseverance
And through this we may learn how to be
Of the character and capacity God hopes for us
And a good Christian for all to see.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought
Use God’s gifts to help all mankind.
These messages rang clear and made me re-think
As they slowly permeated my soul
I dropped my ego and prayed for my marriage
And once again I began to feel whole.
Many years have passed since those turbulent times
Our marriage is now in good health
With God’s grace we celebrated our 21st year
And learned another meaning of wealth.
In those darkest nights when I thought I controlled
The frayed fragments I held onto so tight
I realize Oh, that was You, Lord
Who carried me through my plight.
