Sunda, Chicago, “New Asian” Cuisine

Everyone’s talking about Sunda (Chicago). So, last week, I had a meeting downtown, and decided that afterward I’d check out this hot, hot, hot restaurant that’s all the rage right now.

Walking in to the restaurant that calls its menu “New Asian” cuisine, I was immediately impressed by the décor, with it’s loft-like, comfortable, yet elegant feel. I went up to the bar and asked the bartender about Pinot Noirs. He came back with two for me to taste and both were excellent. I picked one, and then began talking to Sean, a tall, dark, handsome young trader who gave me a sample of Sunda’s demographic (young, hot professional city people). Ladies, you should be RUNNING to this place if you want to meet single men!! Read More »

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants–Chicago

I don’t really know why I don’t go to Cooper’s Hawk more often! I was there the other night and realized that it is one of THE BEST restaurants on the North Shore. Now, for those who know me well, you’re probably thinking I’m saying this because my first date with my boyfriend was there, and yes, it does hold a special place in my heart for that reason. But honestly, Cooper’s Hawk is really, really a top-notch place in many ways.

The ambiance is great. It’s decor is cozy and comforting, yet it’s got style and it’s hip. The bar area is always fun, and the crowd tends to be a combination of locals and business travelers who are staying at one of the nearby hotels.

Let’s start with drinks. Cooper’s Hawk is a winery, meaning that all their wines are Cooper’s Hawk. They don’t carry any other labels. I’ve had reds and I’ve had whites and I can honestly say, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad glass of wine there. The best part is, they are very reasonably priced. Glasses start at $6.25 and the most expensive is $12.00, but most of the wines run about $7.00 a glass.  They also have a full martini and sangria menu.

Let’s get to “the meat” (literally.) I think I’ve been to Cooper’s Hawk four times. Here are a few things I’ve had. A delicious Pistachio crusted grouper, Caprese flatbread, and my favorite thing of all, the Blackened Bleu Steak Salad. THE BEST!! Other things that look great are blackened bacon-wrapped sea scallops, chopped wedge salad, and pepperjack cheese with jalepeno bacon burger. Another really nice touch is that they give you this pretzel bread that is to die for!! But try not to eat too much of it because the food is so good.

I have to be honest, I’ve never had dessert at Cooper’s Hawk, but here’s what looks the best to me: Reese’s Ice Cream cookie and crumbled apple pie. They also have a wine and chocolates platter that includes three sweet wines, if that’s what you’re into.

Cooper’s Hawk has a children’s menu if you want to bring the kiddies. It’s only $5.99!

One last thing I want to mention. When you walk into Cooper’s Hawk (they have 8 locations in Chicago but I’m talking about the Wheeling location) there’s this really pretty tasting room that is also a gift store.  So, you can just go there to taste some wines and shop. They have lots of really cute wine and food related items that make great gifts. And while you’re there, you can get a few tastes and take home a bottle of something you like.

Cooper’s Hawk… Loving that place!

Editor’s Note: Cooper’s Hawk opened in 2005. They tout having one of the largest wine clubs in the country. They develop 12 to 15 blends exclusively for the wine club members.

Cooper’s Hawk has multiple locations and produces more than 125,000 cases of wine per year. See our business directory for their specific midwest locations. Video by Cooper’s Hawk.

Buon Appetito’s Authentic Décor Will Make You Feel Like You’ve Landed in Italy

It’s the kind of find that you can’t resist telling everyone you know about-”it’s a cozy, romantic restaurant that makes you feel as though you’ve landed in Italy”, you tell your friends, and then you say ‘and it’s in Houston.’

I haven’t spent much time in Houston and I’ve been to Italy only twice but I think I can safely say as an Italian cuisine lover that this is a pretty good find in an unexpected place. The location isn’t the greatest neighborhood-maybe 15 minutes from the Houston Astrodome-but step inside this small-house-turned-Sicilian Trattoria and your eyes will have the first delight, next your ears, and then your palate.

The restaurant has been in business for nearly 30 years and the guitarist who serenades the patrons told me that the owner is tired and may be looking to sell. Hopefully, if that happens, the new owners will carry on what seems to have worked for the past three decades.

It’s quaint and romantic inside-sort of like a cottage-style home with an Italian flare-red is the main color of the carpet and upholstery. There are a few small rooms; I dined in one that looked as though it could have been a small den at one time. Nearby sat a couple that seemed like they were on a first date, a trio of seniors out for a nice night, and a father and son. The elderly guitarist (who likely had been strumming there or at other fine restaurants for decades) talked graciously with the dinner guests in between several songs, some in Spanish and others in English. When he stopped at my table he reached for my hand and, in true Italian style, kissed it gently. I later learned he was Spanish (and he thought I was too). The song he told me was a great Spanish love song; he gently made a motion as though he was wiping tears and then kissed my hand again-charming guitarist to match an equally charming ambiance.

There are restaurants where the mood captures you and the food is merely a pleasant addition because your other senses have already been satisfactorily overwhelmed. This was the case here. I ordered veal and a salad. The salad for just $3.95 was delicious. Grilled peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and served with garlic bread that was perfect for dipping in the salad dressing-a creamy Italian vinaigrette mixture. The veal was made with a lemon-butter sauce a little thicker than I was used to. It was accompanied by spaghetti with meat sauce-overall tasty.

Here you could sit for hours, just like slipping into a hot bubble bath-it just feels so good and so needed.

Tasty & Fast Halibut Recipe

Tasty & Fast Halibut Recipe

Video recipe. Fish is a highly preferred option to meat for many people but sometimes people pour on the marinade and spices and, well, it turns out tasting like nothing but spices–where’s the fish? Live Fit Magazine visited the newly opened, La Jolla Bistro 101, to ask how they prepare halibut.

Sometimes simple truly is better. A few ingredients, some fresh halibut, and Voila!–A healthy, mouthwatering meal that gives the impression it took longer to make than it really did! Less time cooking = more time enjoying–and that’s exactly the way we at LFM like it… we think you will too. Watch this quick video to try the recipe.
