Oscar-Style Shopping in the Footsteps of the Stars

Los Angeles.  Its setting is legendary.  The Hollywood sign is the hillside backdrop to a cityscape of endless freeways, countless palm trees and (during my visit) smog-free skies and crisp, clear mountains.

Kitson store Oscar-style shopping in footsteps of the stars story by Cynthia Dial for Live Fit Magazine

While savoring a latte at Starbucks, I eavesdropped on nearby patrons.  The local coffee-drinking chatter was as informative as the National Enquirer.  “Were Brad and Angelina having an additional set of twins?” was the topic at one table while a more somber discussion involved Whitney Houston at another.  But after thoroughly dissecting these high-profile celebs, they moved on to the real buzz . . . “the industry” (films, that is) and its upcoming Oscars.

My choice of locales was not coincidental.  I was in shopping mode – celebrity style, hence my trek to Tinseltown.

The goal of my Los Angeles foray was simple:  trace the shopping trails of A-listers.  Armed with a star-studded itinerary, my mission was to visit stores celebs haunt and resalers that feature their frocks . . . going beyond legendary Rodeo Drive.

My base of operations was the Millennium Biltmore, an old-style grand hotel with a lengthy history in television and movies (it’s featured in productions like “Daredevil,” “West Wing,” “Independence Day” and “The American President”).

Its Academy Awards ties were of particular interest.  The Oscar statuette was designed (sketched on a linen napkin) during a banquet in the hotel’s Crystal Ballroom.  And for many years the event’s ceremonies were hosted there (it’s where Shirley Temple received her child-sized Oscar in 1935).

Thus, in an “entertainment industry” frame of mind . . . I set out.  First stop was to peruse discarded duds from the big screen and smaller screen (television).   It’s a Wrap (1164 South Robertson Boulevard) has displayed Rocky’s boxers and Pamela Anderson’s “Baywatch” swimsuit.  It claims to be the world’s only store that offers the general public the opportunity to purchase actual wardrobe and props from movie and TV sets.  They’re tagged with production show codes and production titles and they’re accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.  Even the famous people go there to shop – think Olsen twins, Gena Davis and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Vintage fashion specialist Doris Raymond owns The Way We Wore (334 S. La Brea).  She travels the world unearthing vintage garments for her store and works with stars’ stylists.  Finds range from Chanel jackets to a multi-tiered Dior cocktail dress to less expensive treasures, such as costume jewelry brooches.

For the star experience, stop at Fred Segal (8118 Melrose, West Hollywood; 500 Broadway, Santa Monica).  Catering to celebs, it features VIP dressing rooms – merchandise is delivered to them, though Cameron Diaz has been spotted flipping through the racks herself.  The store has mini boutiques (formal wear, undies, shoes, etc.).  They appeal to both sexes, offering items such as men’s hooded cashmere sweaters as well as 14-karat gold ‘princess’ necklaces.

Paparazzi were lingering when I popped into Kitson (115 S. Robertson).  “Desperate Housewives” sexy star Eva Longoria was there (checking out shoes).  It’s a frequent haunt of Drew Barrymore and Britney Spears and sells everything from expensive Pucci shoes to fun canvas totes emblazed “My Gucci’s taking a vacation” for the more budget-minded.

Lily et Cie (9044 Burton Way) is not exactly a boutique for window shoppers. The 5,000-square-foot “find” is in Beverly Hills, so that should be an indicator that this is not a store where you’ll unearth your standard fare. Looky loos beware: Don’t expect a friendly welcome, don’t ask to try anything on and do not move the clothes over the racks by any other means than the hanger.  It’s more like a museum than a clothing boutique, and owner Rita Watnick is its self proclaimed “curator.” But it’s worth the rigid rules.  It’s where Renee Zellweger’s stylist found the legendary yellow vintage gown by Carolina Herrera that she wore to the 2001 Oscars.  Case closed.

Tips n’ Trends

The LA look is casual but chic.  Following are tips to blend:

  • Wear skinny jeans, 5-inch platforms and carry an oversized bag.  The “in” male ensemble is jeans and a black leather jacket.
  • Walk with an attitude.
  • If possible, accessorize with a dog (it’s a people magnet).

STAR-STUDDED DINING

* Ivy (113 N. Robertson, Los Angeles).  A table at this quaint, two-room cottage-like restaurant is a coveted commodity.  Because of its celebrity-magnet status, paparazzi are frequent sidewalk fixtures.  Table 41 (in the heart of the patio) seats many an A-lister.  Contact: 310-274-8303.

* Polo Lounge (9641 Sunset Blvd., The Beverly Hills Hotel).  Known as a local favorite watering hole/eatery for Tinseltown’s movers and shakers, it’s the place to be.  In good weather, request patio dining.  At cocktail hour, the coveted spot is at the bar.  Contact: 310-887-2777.

Romance on a Budget

Romance on a Budget

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the pressure is on to think of the perfect gift to surprise that special someone in your life. Now for those of you who think that Valentine’s Day is just a scam thought up by greeting card companies and florists, never fear because there are plenty of ways to woo your loved one without breaking the bank and buying into consumerism.

Here are five romantic San Diego ideas that are sure to impress for under $20.

Paddle Boating

For the more adventurous couples, an open-air activity is ideal for romance. At Santee Lakes you and your sweetheart can sail your way through the scenery of the beautiful outdoors by renting one of their two-seater paddle boats for either $8 for a half hour or $11 for an hour. It’ll be fun to work as a team and you two can make a game out of who can spot the most ducks, turtles and rabbits. Not only can you get some fresh air, it’s a great way to live fit with the one you love.

Scenic Picnic

A home-cooked meal is always a great way to show somebody how much you care, but why not push that a step further by taking your food alfresco. Surprise your Valentine with his or her favorite snacks, package them up in a picnic basket and with a blanket in tow take your date to a surprise destination. I recommend the Torrey Pines Glider Port. Sitting on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, watching the paragliders soar off into the sunset is a romantic atmosphere that comes at no cost. Splurge on a bottle of champagne, or some chocolate covered strawberries. Bonus points if the chocolate covered strawberries are home-made!

Drive-In Movie

A blast from the past will remind your date of favorite childhood memories. At the drive-in you get all the fun of going to the movies without the hassle of noisy babies, cell phone ring tones and expensive snacks. You can snuggle up with your sweetheart and laugh out loud at your favorite jokes without having to worry about the inevitable “shhhh!” of irritation you would get at a movie theater. At the drive in you get two movies for the price of one and, with most drive-in’s charging only $7 compared to the whopping $11.50 charged in theaters, you can use the money you save to go to your local grocery store to grab some last minute goodies to munch on during the flicks.

Balboa Park Museum

Most locals avoid Balboa Park to escape from the tourists, and what a shame because it also happens to be one of the most beautiful parts of our city. Luckily, one of the best-kept secrets of San Diego is the perks you get just for being a local. On the first four Tuesday’s of the month, select museums at Balboa park are free for San Diego locals. Take a stroll around the park and make sure to pack a camera because, from the gardens to the architecture, Balboa Park is home to some of the most picturesque gardens and plenty of other spots are perfect for a couple’s photo opp.

Extraordinary Desserts

The name says it all. Skip the typical box of chocolates and treat your Valentine to this dessert haven. It’s a sweet tooth’s paradise here where the desserts are decadent and the decorations are divine. There’s nothing more romantic than a candlelight dessert for two, and at Extraordinary Desserts, you won’t be disappointed with their huge selection of sweets (my favorite is the Shangri-La cake. Yum!). I’d recommend sharing one of their specials. At only $11.50 you and your sweetie will have plenty of dessert to share, and each special is paired with one of their specialty ice creams. Just make sure that you get there early; this place attracts a crowd!

Not only are these ideas great for Valentine’s day, but these date-ideas can work for year-round romance. I say, make everyday Valentines Day by showing the love in your life how much you care 365 days a year.

Happy Valentines Day from Live Fit Magazine.

When it Comes to Fashion, Follow Your Heart

Urban Vintage

I was in Rome for the past two weeks. It’s perfect beauty of nature, architecture, historical monuments, culture, colorful food…and, of course, the fashion are what makes this city so incredible! This is the heart of fashion and with all the beautiful apparel, I couldn’t help but notice one item of clothing everywhere.

My eyes fell on this unbelievable pair of flowing, brightly colored pants. Something odd and very retro but still I found them in every store and on countless women on every street corner. The item: parachute pants.

As the Fashion and Beauty Editor for Live Fit Magazine and Films, I couldn’t wait to share this with you. I’ve seen these pants in the U.S. but not that much. Of course, we know what’s popular in Italy, especially, eventually makes its way to the states.

A few weeks before I left for Rome, I went shopping with a couple of my girlfriends. We went into Forever 21 and were perusing all racks and shelves when my friend pointed out a pair of baggy pants with a big tribal-looking pattern on them. She told me, “I could totally see you wearing these.” I was intrigued by the odd pants so I tried them on and to my surprise loved them! However, I didn’t buy them because I thought they were too out-there even for my style. But I kept thinking about how I should have bought the pants. So when I visited Italy and saw many women wearing parachute pants I realized I should have gotten them! Not just because they’re in style here, but because I simply loved them.

The moral of this story is if you like something, get it! Why should it matter if it is in style or not? It’s what you like and who knows–perhaps one day everyone will follow you.

Many of my friends at school have complimented me on my unique style so I decided to create a column that talks about my styles, the in-fashion, and original ideas. In my opinion, fashion is not about what the latest trends are, but what you feel expresses you and just in general what you like. Follow some trends you like and create the rest yourself. Don’t be afraid to wear something completely crazy. Be original! It’s how you get noticed!

Thanks for reading this week’s article! Here are some photos taken by Live Fit Magazine and Films of some outfits that I love!
