I’ve been fortunate to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants, and what stood out to me at Jeune et Jolie wasn’t just the beautiful plating; it was how approachable the experience felt. Fine dining can sometimes feel intimidating, but here it felt welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable. It was elegant without being pretentious, and that balance made the evening even more memorable.
Some restaurants are simply places to eat. Others become part of the travel experience itself. This one is practically in our own backyard, yet the moment we took our seats, it felt as though we had escaped to a cozy neighborhood bistro in Paris.
We dined here to celebrate my husband John’s birthday, and he had been looking forward to the experience for weeks. By the end of the evening, we both understood why Jeune et Jolie continues to be one of Southern California’s most celebrated dining destinations.
French Technique Meets California Ingredients
Jeune et Jolie is led by Executive Chef Eric Bost, whose thoughtful approach to French cuisine helped shape the restaurant’s identity. After cooking in Michelin-starred kitchens in France and earning acclaim in Los Angeles, Bost brought his refined yet approachable style to Carlsbad. His philosophy paired classic French technique with California’s exceptional seasonal ingredients, creating tasting menus that felt sophisticated without ever feeling intimidating.
Jeune et Jolie has also helped put Carlsbad on the culinary map. While the coastal city has long been known for its beaches, flower fields, and relaxed village atmosphere, it has quietly evolved into one of Southern California’s premier culinary destinations. Today, San Diego County is home to five Michelin-starred restaurants: Addison in Del Mar, Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad, Lilo in Carlsbad, Lucien in La Jolla, and Soichi in San Diego.
An Evening to Remember
Tucked away in the heart of Carlsbad Village, Jeune et Jolie transforms dinner into an evening that unfolds one thoughtfully crafted course at a time. From the moment we were seated, we were enamored by the charm. Every detail — from the elegant table setting and handwritten menus to the optional Jolie wine pairing — invited us to slow down and savor the experience. The outdoor dining area isn’t large, but its café lights, intimate seating, and welcoming atmosphere made it feel effortlessly romantic.
The four-course tasting menu celebrated seasonal California ingredients through a distinctly French lens. Guests could personalize their meal by selecting from several dishes within each course, making the experience feel both curated and uniquely their own.
A Beautifully Curated Tasting Menu

Before the tasting menu officially began, we were presented with a beautifully prepared amuse-bouche served in a whimsical hand-painted ceramic cup. It was a small but memorable first bite. Delicate, seasonal, and a thoughtful introduction to the creativity that would define the rest of the evening.

For our visit, the menu began with a vibrant tomato course accented with black garlic, date, and anise hyssop. It was a refreshing start that awakened the palate without overwhelming it.

The second course featured several creative selections, and we chose the rich L’Oeuf with egg yolk, eggplant, Burgundy truffle, and vin jaune sabayon alongside the beautifully prepared halibut served with potato, chanterelle mushrooms, apricot, and salt marsh mussels. Both dishes reflected the restaurant’s French-inspired approach while highlighting exceptional seasonal California ingredients.

For the third course, we enjoyed the Courgette with summer squash, ricotta dumpling, mushrooms, and marjoram, along with the beautifully prepared Loup de Mer featuring sea bass with nardello peppers and squid. Each dish demonstrated the kitchen’s attention to balance, flavor, and presentation.
Dessert did not disappoint. Seasonal offerings included blackberry with almond and praline, mango with coconut rice pudding and Thai basil, a French almond financier with passionfruit, chocolate, and banana, and an optional Époisses cheese course. And, of course, the staff also surprised my husband with a special birthday dessert. The night was a success!

Why We’d Go Back
More than any single dish, what stayed with us was the rhythm of the evening. The service was polished without feeling formal. This is something I appreciate because I prefer charming hospitality over stuffy restaurant etiquette. Each course arrived at an unhurried pace, allowing us to fully enjoy our conversation, the wine, and the artistry on every plate.
Dining at Jeune et Jolie isn’t simply about exceptional food — it’s about slowing down, savoring every course, and sharing an evening you’ll remember long after the last bite. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or simply treating yourself to an unforgettable meal, this Michelin-starred gem proves that one of California’s finest dining experiences can be found right here in Carlsbad, California.
Editor’s Note: We visited Jeune et Jolie in 2021. While the tasting menu changes seasonally and dishes evolve over time, the exceptional hospitality, thoughtful pacing, and overall dining experience are what continue to stand out in our memory.
